Ambassador's House Car hire

Car hire can be arranged for you, and you will be met at the airport and escorted to the house

Cafes, bars and restaurents:

For lunch on the beach try the Beach bar at Little Bacolet bay, our nearest beach, 8 minutes away. This is a beautiful palm-fringed sandy beach with a good bar run by the neighbouring hotel who will hire you a lounger and serve drinks and lunches all day. A bit further, and on the other side of the island, but easily accessible (25mins) from Ambassadors House, Castara has a treetop bar on the beach serving a variety of local dishes and the local Carib beer - a bit further is Englishmans Bay where there is a local food stall and Parlatouvier where there is the excellent Riverside restaurent , listed below. Further on towards the rain forest there are several little cafes which have sprung up by the roadside recently serving drinks and snacks.

The Blue Crab, Robinson St. Upper Scarborough - very good local food cooked by Ken and Alison the owners - (lunches only) 639-2737 Well worth a visit, the owners are very nice, you may have seen them with daughter Sandy on the TV programme 'Rhodes around the Caribbean' cooking with Gary Rhodes.

Ciaou Café, Lower Scarborough - an Italian café for light lunches, excellent coffee and wonderful ice creams; there is now a pizza parlour next door run by the same charismatic Italian, the food there is equally good.

La Tartaruga, Bucco, superb Italian food and a wonderful selection of Italian wines, expensive by Tobagonian standards but great for a special night out, 639-0940. He also has 2 cafés in Lower Scarborough. (Ciaou and the pizza cafe)

The Salsa Kitchen, Scarborough (just on the right off the main Claude Noel Highway before you get into Scarborough) - delicious Venezuelan food, a favourite of guests; you need to book early as it is very small with only 4 tables, their phone number is in our phone book.

Meeshelles on the Shirvan road at the turning to Mr Moreshead's store is also a favourite of ours for an inexpensive evening with good local food and friendly service. There are several restaurants in that area, Indigo, La Terazza and various others to choose from.

Shore Things is a little café on the old Milford Road which serves lovely home made light lunches, cakes, drinks and desserts, and sells lots of good souvenirs to take home. A favourite with guests is their excellent rum punch.

The Blackrock Café, Blackrock, good varied cuisine, 639-7625, on the road between Grafton and Turtle Beach

All these are within very easy reach of Concordia: Scarborough is 8 min drive, Shore Things 10 mins, Buccoo and Shirvan Road about 15 mins and Blackrock 20mins.

Jemma's Sea View Kitchen, Speyside is a memorable experience as the restaurant is built in a tree! Great shrimps, no alcohol as Jemma is a seventh day adventist , and therefore not open on Saturdays 660-4066 This restaurant has become a lot more expensive since publicity on TV in the UK, but is still very good value. It is on the tourist route and can be crowded but the food is really good. The Speyside Hotel and Manta Lodge just up the road from Jemmas are both good.

Riverside Restaurent Parlatuvier, a good stopover for lunch really excellent local food.

Charlotteville there is a very good little restaurant opposite the pier where we had excellent flying fish and chips! Not licensed for alcohol but someone will go to the store down the road for beers for you. Also Sharon and Phoebes restaurant, which serves alcohol.

We have tried all the above restaurants and enjoyed meals there. Our favourites are La Tartaruga, Ciaou, Meeshelles, Salsa Kitchen and Shore Things. If you go on a trip to Speyside, don't miss a visit to Jemma's; the Riverside at Parlatouvier is always good, but the best value on the island is flying fish and chips at either of the little restaurants at Charlotteville.
Ambassador's HouseShopping

Shops open about 9am and close about 4.30pm. Banks close at 2pm.

There are several Banks in Scarborough, and also one at the airport, and two others in that area. They all have cash machines where you can withdraw local currency from your UK account. If you need to change money it is well worth going to the bank early, as they get very busy, and you can spend a long time queuing (don't forget to take your passport).

There is a large chemist in upper Scarborough opposite the Royal Bank, and in lower Scarborough opposite KFC.

Pennysavers supermarket (either on the main road not far from the airport [this one also has a cash machine] or at Carnbee) is the best, but there are several nearer home which are good for basics, one is just a few minutes down the road, called Jesus Christ the Difference. Another good supermarket is Moresheads, between Carnbee and Shirvan road, (near Meeshelles) there are ice cream makers on that road too.

There is a good little bakery just down the road from the house called Patricia's for fresh bread, pies and cakes in the mornings.

Fruit and vegetables can be bought quite cheaply from one of the many roadside stalls. There is a lively daily market selling fruit, vegetables, meat and fish (as well as lots of other things) in Scarborough, which is well worth a visit, preferably with Lesleyann to guide you to the best stalls.

Local fish can be bought direct from the fishermen at roadside stalls in the afternoons, and is very reasonably priced, usually around TT$12 per lb (about £1.10 per lb) The price may have gone up due to fuel price increases lately. There are stalls at Mount Irvine Bay and on the road going towards Speyside. You will often hear the fishermen blowing a conch shell in Scarborough to tell people a van is coming with the day's catch.
Ambassador's House Entertainment and night-life

This is not very lively in Tobago, but getting more varied now. The weekly street party at Bucco, called Sunday School, should not be missed, I'm told. The hotels often have evening entertainment, discos etc, but ask Lesleyann our housekeeper for suitable locations of local discos and bars as she will have up-to-date information.
